Clean. Green Clean.

I receive a ton of emails asking me questions about how my family and I live an organic lifestyle. Usually the questions revolve around food, the 3R’s, clothes and toys. Another popular question I’m often asked about is what I use to clean up my home with.  Well, I can tell you I do a lot of cleaning throughout the day, thanks to my 22 month old son!

I use what our a lot of our grandmothers used to clean with: vinegar.  I fill up a spray bottle with some and dilute it with water as an all purpose cleaner, and use it full concentrate for mirrors and windows.  Yes, it does smell at first, but as it dries the smell of vinegar vanishes and all that’s left is a clean smelling home.

If I’m going to use store bought cleaners, I use green cleaning products.  I personally love the Clorox® Green Works® Line.  I use their entire line – from all purpose cleaners to dishwasher liquids.   I find they work the best out of all the green cleaners I’ve tried.  There products are dermatologist-tested and made with plant and mineral-based ingredients – not to mention they’ve also been certified from the Natural Products Association.

I should stop right now and mention that this isn’t a paid endorsement for Clorox ;) I just happen to love their green works products and use them at home.  I’m sure there are other really great green cleaners out there, I just prefer this line to all others.

I think it’s really important for parents to stop and think about what they’re spraying in their home. Ask yourself if there are harsh chemicals in the products you have under the sink or in your bathroom.   Next, ask yourself how those chemicals could be hurting you and your children without you even knowing.  You might find a green cleaner will put your mind at ease, or you might conclude it’s not a big deal. Whatever your choice is, it’s worth taking a minute or two to think about, wouldn’t you agree?

  • I am always searching for better green cleaning products. I want to start doing some DIY stuff. I will definitely break out the vinegar. My dog puked on the rug today. If one creature isn’t excreting something, the other is…any ideas beyond baking soda?

Another dog to lick it up? I hear they like to do that! lol
I’d stick with baking soda for that one, just to be on the safe side!
