5 ways to “green” your home this Fall/Winter

.

  1. Use compact fluorescent light-bulbs. The typical spiral-shaped bulbs fit most fixtures and use just 1/4 the energy of incandescent bulbs. Bonus: they give a beautiful bright white light, opposed to traditional bulbs which give off a dingy yellow-tint.
  2. Go appliance shopping! Replacing old appliances (especially refrigerators) with “Energy Star” qualified home appliances that use 10-50% percent less energy & water than standard models.  Make sure to stop at your favourite coffee shop first and load up on your signature drink – there are a lot of appliances to choose from!
  3. Insulate & Program! Buy and install an inexpensive programmable thermostat that can lower your house temperature when you’re at work and/or asleep. Make sure that your hot-water heater is insulated and set it at 50°C (120°F). Stop drafts by caulking your windows, installing sweeps on door bottoms, insulating around drafty outlets and vents, and using window coverings, which help keep the warmth in and the cold out!
  4. Purchase and install low-flow toilets (1.6 gallons per flush) and take advantage of any rebates your city may offer for doing so!
  5. If you are looking to do some home improvements this winter, try sourcing used materials to do the job. Online used item sites are perfect for finding gently used building materials, tools and supplies.  When possible, repurpose as much as you can and remember the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse & Recycle!

.

With just a little pre-planning, anyone can green their home in a few simple steps and save a ton of money too!

  • great ideas! I love the toilet one. I think the low flow toilets are great (and kids love pushing the buttons to flush!). Should definitely consider that for our place!!
