Eggs: Which are better?

.

Eggs are very high in protein and low in calories and saturated fat. Recent studies have even shown that eating the 2 egg breakfast special at you favourite family restaurant won’t significantly raise your bad cholesterol (“Low-density lipoprotein” aka LDL) or contribute to heart disease after all.

So whether you like ‘em sunny side up, scrambled, over easy or poached, you should know that not all eggs aren’t created equal. So how do you know which eggs are better than the others? Keep reading to find out!

Don’t judge an egg by it’s shell. White and brown eggs have the same nutritional compounds, as long as they are fed in the same manner.  Really, the colour of egg shells are a reflection of the colour and breed of the bird it came from. Brown bird = brown egg. White bird = white egg.

Organic eggs are produced by hens fed entirely of an organic diet, containing absolutely no hormones or animal by-products. A common misconception by consumers is thinking that eggs labeled “vegetarian-fed” and “antibiotic-free” are certified organic, while in fact they may not be.  Additionally, even though organic hens are required access to the outdoors, they still may be raised in cages, not free-range environments.

Looking for a little added boost of Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet? Choose eggs that are produced by hens fed diets rich in flaxseed and seaweed. The yolk (not egg whites) contain higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids than their counterparts.  These eggs may cost a little more than your average run-of-the-mill eggs, but it’s a no brainer when it comes to boosting your health.

So tell me, how do you like your eggs?

  • Great informative post! I like omega 3 eggs, and I look for the ones made by vegetarian fed ones. And I almost always eat them scrambled with a little bit if milk mixed with them. Yum!

  • I buy my eggs from a family at church that raises chickens in their yard. Free range, fed organic, and straight from the chickens butt!!
